Writing this paper begins with selecting a work of literature. Iâll put together a list of works that I think are good, but you can also choose something on your own, with my approval. I want to make sure youâre picking something youâre genuinely interested in, so I will want to check with you to see why youâve chosen the work youâve chosen.
Once youâve chosen and read the work that you want to write about, the next thing to do is to select a topicâa focus for your paper. The topic should not just be the paper itself. In a literary analysis, you do not really even need to summarize the work, or tell what itâs about, except when itâs in support of your argument. Rather than looking to explain the work, you should start with something in the work that youâre curious aboutâsome aspect of the work that you think will be interesting to focus on.
After youâve got the work and the topic, itâs time to do some research. You can do research in a lot of ways. You can see what other writers have to say about the work, or you can look at a particular aspect of the work (for instance, if youâre interested in the idea of the âepicâ in âI am Joaquinâ you might look up stuff that helps clarify what an epic poem is, even if it doesnât directly address the poem, âI am Joaquin.â You can also look up material on the historical period in which the work was written, or even material on a social issue the work addresses. For this paper, there will be required research, and youâll need to include (cite directly from) at least two HCC library sources. You can also include or cite other sources in addition to the two from the HCC library if you wish, though I recommend staying away from Wikipedia and lit interpretation .com websites for citation. They have their value, but itâs not for citing stuff in an academic paper.
Once youâve done your research, you can begin forming your argument. Remember that your argument will be in relation to your topic. If your topic is the epic in âI am Joaquinâ then you need to make an argument about the role of the epic in âI am Joaquin.â It should be an argument that a reasonable person can disagree with, and that even an avid fan of the poem can learn from. The purpose of an argument in a paper like this is to advance the conversationâto get readers to consider the work from an angle they may not have considered.
In a paper that includes research, your body paragraphs are still used to support your main argument, but they also cite the research directly.
