We’re doing this as a three group discussion and I’m the President of the United States
It is required, that you complete this assignment in groups! Please email one another and post all responses in one thread. One person is to be the Advisor to the President, one person is the President of the United States, and one person will release a Press Release of the President\’s decision.
The term global warming was changed to climate change as it was not entirely an accurate term…some areas are believed to be getting warmer while others are expected to get colder. This could create an economic shift as areas like Florida with three growing seasons would have none due to extreme weather/storm surges, while areas typically dark and cold, Alaska, would have three growing seasons! Imagine not being the agricultural center of the United States! Imagine population shifts, tourism shifts, and economic loss due to these issues.
Climate change is not well understood among most people. There are many solid reasons for this misunderstanding First, the models are unpredictable, vary considerably and contain reasonable error. The main reason for these differences stem from the lack of inclusion of clouds in model programs. Understand cloud cover vary depending on where the calculations are taken. Some areas have higher amounts of precipitation that others. As a result, they are typically not included in calculations as they are too difficult to predict with any reason of certainty. This is problematic to scientists because the clouds produce rain that cools the planet–not including them within the calculation would result in unreasonable heat expectations. Second, many of the measuring tools are on top of skyscrapers in the middle of large cities thereby creating heat islands and differences in heat indexes. Third, the earth still has glaciers remaining from the ice age. These glaciers were not present prior to the ice age. As a result, many scientists believe we are coming out of an ice age. Finally, the biggest concern is that the Earth–on a geological time scale– is really not that old and there is no way to predict its cycles…after all the world was hotter and there was more carbon dioxide on the planet during the dinosaur age.
Your instructor\’s belief…it doesn\’t matter! Lets stop fighting among ourselves and solve the air pollution problem that is known to result in negative effects to the environment and our health. In doing so, we are taking positive steps to the future and thereby dealing with our carbon footprint!
This assignment is three fold:
Using your reading and past experiences/beliefs and within your groups establish a President, President\’s Advisor, and a member of the Press. The Advisor to the President\’s should provide a neutral and intuitive argument that is both for and against climate change and whether you feel the US should rejoin the Paris Climate Accord. If you are the President, you are required to form a thoughtful response to all advice given by your advisor and form a decision regarding climate change and the Paris Climate Accord. If you are a member of the Press, please report on advice given, the President\’s decision, and your thoughts.
Alternatively: You can use current events and build your discussion around the COP26 that is currently happening. Each member of the group will choose a country and represent that country\’s needs. Consider the feasibility of the plan and your country\’s economic status. Are you able to meet the terms of the agreement? What would you rather see happen? Build your case. Return to your group members and come up a plan and timeline for your plan.
Your discussion should contain at least a paragraph explaining the problem, a paragraph for policies implementing regulations pertaining to decreasing emissions, a paragraph addressing whether it is the US should/should not return to the Paris Climate Agreement, a paragraph re-affirming the President\’s position, and a paragraph that is in contrast to the President\’s position. Conclude your discussion with a paragraph that states if you are seeking my opinion….
Remember if you are the advisor to the POTUS your opinion is of little consequence, going off on a tangent will not only get you fired but will result in a zero! Simply present the facts of both sides of the issue. Please be precise and use examples from your reading and current events to argue a case for and against remaining in the Paris climate agreement. Please attach any sources you use. If you are the President you must write a letter to your advisor addressing their concerns and give your response to the Advisor and the Press. If you are the Press, your response must be in the form of a Press Release.
