This assignment has two parts: a Family Genogram Drawing and a Family Genogram Paper.
Part One: Family Genogram Drawing
For this assignment you will construct a family genogram. You will have an opportunity to do some research on three generations, your family of origin, your nuclear family and so on, by interviewing members of your family. Once you decide on who you will interview, obtain as much information about your family of origin as possible. I have attached some Sample Interview Questions to assist you, as well as provided examples of Standard Symbols for Genograms. Although, some family members may be very forthcoming about sharing information, some may be hesitant. It’s important to respectfully ask questions but if the person is not willing to share the information, let them know that is “okay.” Invite them to share the information in the future, should they want to. Sometimes you can get more information from someone in the family who is one step removed, say an aunt or uncle, versus a parent. It is important to recognize that genograms often bring out family information that is considered sensitive. It is up to you to determine what information actually finds its’ way onto your genogram. It is useful to use abbreviations or create symbols for information that is sensitive. Only you need to know what they stand for. However, when you are writing your paper, you will be asked to directly discuss significant family patterns you uncovered while completing your genogram.
Listed below is some information for 3 generations.
Your grandparents and their siblings
Your parents/caregivers and their siblings
Yourself and your siblings
If you are married/partnering, you will include your children as a 4th generation (or as a 3rd generation if previous generational information is not available)
Include meaningful details like:
First names or initials of family members
Birth dates and current ages (age is inside the circle/square of the person)
Death, and causes of death (if someone had died, there is an x in the circle /square with their age of death either in the circle or just above the circle/square)
Date of marriages, divorces, children, miscarriage, abortion, adoption
Educational level and occupations
Physical illness, diseases, incarceration, mental health concerns, drug and alcohol use, smoking
Extensive moves, disconnect from family members
Ethic background, religious, cultural background
Once you have collected your information, you can draw your genogram.
On a large piece of paper, prepare a three-generation genogram indicating family structure, family information, and family relationships.
Use black ink or colored markers to draw the genogram instead of pencil.
Draw the genogram on an 8 x 11 inch piece of paper.
Draw boundaries around family members who presently live together.
Include demographic information and symbols showing emotional close/distance between family members.
Date the genogram in the lower right hand corner of the paper.
Part Two: Family Genogram Paper
Once you complete your genogram, you will write a paper, which is an opportunity for you to discuss-in depth what you learned about yourself and your family of origin. Write about the experience of creating the genogram. Include and reference information you have learned through the readings, discussion boards, and research assignments, or other research you have conducted that has helped you to understand the effects of family of origin patterns on your life course.
The paper must include a discussion of three patterns that you observed in your family that were evidenced in the three generational process, how you understand these patterns, and the ways these patterns have impacted your life and continue to affect you today. The three patterns that you discuss must be clearly evidenced on your actual genogram.
Identify any family life cycle issues that you have that may interfere when working with families who are struggling with similar issues. How would you overcome these issues?
In your conclusion, discuss the value of the genogram as a tool for the Human Service professional and how its use would benefit families who access the services of Human Services professionals.
Any material used from the readings or other sources must be clearly cited in your paper, and a reference page included.
Format
Students should use the following format for their written assignment.
Your paper must include two to three pages of written content.
Use APA format and cite sources, as necessary.
In addition to the 2 to 3 pages of written content, please include:
Title Page
Appropriate Headings and Sub-Headings
Reference Page (minimum of 4 scholarly references)
Scanned copy of your genogram drawing
Use a minimum of 4 scholarly references – scholarly references can include peer-reviewed articles, textbook, journals, and included supplemental resources
