The country I was assigned is Russia so that is what the paper\’s subject should be.
By the end of week 1, you will be randomly assigned one country as your research focus for the
course. In our discussion posts, you should consider yourself the class expert for that country, so
please learn as much as you can about your country and share what you learn with the class on
Blackboard. For example, during our module on “cities”, you should be able to comment upon a
major city in your country—why it exists, the origins of its name, and its size and current role in
the national, European, and global urban hierarchy. Similarly, during our government module, you
should be prepared to report on your country’s system. Your term paper should include a onepage overview on relevant introductory facts about your country that can facilitate comparison to
the other countries we examine. After your introduction, consider each of the main themes of our
modules in writing your paper. These include physiography, culture, geodemography, geopolitics,
economy, and so on. Finally, monitor and document the most important current events that
occurred over the past two years, paying special attention to those unfolding this summer. You
can find the information in your country’s national news media, as well as in the BBC, the
Economist, and the New York Times. Remember to address how these events are related to your
country’s geography and the other themes covered in this course. You will earn up to 10 points
for the introduction to “your” (assigned) project country, due on the Discussion Forum at midnight
on May 30, and another 10 points for an outline of your paper due at midnight on June 16.
What you need to submit on Blackboard by July 11 (midnight EST) for up to 100 points:
One paper (8-10 double-spaced pages plus appendix). Paper content represents half your grade.
