Students are expected to connect course material to contemporary events around the world. This assignment requires students to find a news story/item each week that is connected any of the lecture/chapter concept & content for that week. Students are expected to read the news item (not just the headline). Under the assignments tab, include the following: 1) Title of story 2) Source of story 3) link to the story 4) 3-4 sentence summary/explanation of how the story relates to the specific chapter content, and how the story connects to your own experience/life. You must also use at least one term from the lecture or chapter in the textbook for that weekâs chapter. 3 of your news items may take place in the United States. The others need to occur in another country. Students will be called upon randomly in class to share their findings. (10 of 13 required without penalty) Example: 1) \’Unprecedented\’ Hajj begins — with 1,000 pilgrims, rather than the usual 2 million 2) CNN News 3) https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/hajj-2020-coronavirus-intl/index.html 4) The story highlights the dramatic number of Muslims participating in the annual pilgrimage to Mecca this year with Saudi Arabia cutting off foreign visitors this year. It relates to religion as this annual event represents one of the core tenets of Islam and the COVID-19 virus has made it impossible for most people to fully practice their faith. Since Islam is a universalizing religion, then people from all over the world are flooding into Saudi Arabia for this event. This story connects to my own experience because my family has a set of religious rituals that are sacred to us, especially during Easter and Christmas.
