In the first paragraph, the introduction, include:
a brief introduction of the art works
thesis statement – the last sentence of your first paragraph. Your thesis should state the main conclusion of the comparison between the art works, stating exactly how they communicate different ideas about the interaction between men and women as portrayed in Baroque art of the Dutch Republic.
After the introductory paragraph, use the rest of the paper to support the thesis. The body of the paper should compare the works. You can organize this part of your paper in 2 ways:
Write about the first work, then the second work, then compare them (in this case you should have at least two long paragraphs of comparison)
In each paragraph make a point of comparison between the works (for example, one paragraph can compare the two works\’ portrayal of the interaction between men and women, another can compare the two works\’ portrayals of the women, etc)
Your last paragraph, the conclusion, should sum up your main points.
You will be graded based on the quality of your writing. Papers with weak argumentation, poor structure, sloppy editing, imprecise or incorrect word choice, spelling errors, or grammatical mistakes will be downgraded. Write a publish and revise it critically. Use Smarthinking Tutoring from Canvas, go to the Writing Center (http://www.tmcc.edu/writingcenter), or send me a publish (except last minute). Doing so will get you 1 extra credit point, as long as you incorporate the feedback into your paper.
I also recommend Grammarly, a website that allows you to see what grammar and spelling mistakes you make, and then allows you to correct them. Here is the link https://www.tmcc.edu/tutoring/online-tutoring/grammarly. Grammarly is much better than the spelling check in Word. You need to sign up for an account using your TMCC email. You must use your TMCC email for the service to be free. Once you sign in, you can paste a text, and the program will correct it, while also explaining to you which common mistakes you make. That way you learn to avoid making the same errors in the future. If you use Grammarly, you can also get 1 extra credit point (just email me the original paper and the final publish showing the changes you made after using Grammarly).
You can get a maximum of 3 extra credit points for the papers. So if you use Grammarly and the Writing Center for the same paper, you are still only getting 1 extra point for that paper.
Cite all your sources (including class readings, PowerPoints, and videos). You cannot write this paper without knowing what is happening in these works. You MUST have at least one source.
If you are quoting something word by word use quotation marks â â. Limit word-by-word quotes to maximum 3 short quotes per paper. Use your own words as much as possible.
If you are putting the ideas from a source in your own words, you MUST STILL USE IN-TEXT CITATIONS. Here is an essential guide to quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/using_research/quoting_paraphrasing_and_summarizing/index.html Here is detailed information on how to paraphrase without plagiarizing: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/using_research/quoting_paraphrasing_and_summarizing/paraphrasing.html
Include in-text citations. Here is info on using in-text citations:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_in_text_citations_the_basics.html (Links to an external site.) Basically, at the end of a sentence, or a group of sentences with information from a source, you must use parentheses in the text with the title of that source. If you err, err on the side of caution, and include in-text citations even when not sure you need them.
You need to include a list of works cited at the end of the paper. Here\’s a guide on how to post your sources in the list of works cited at the end: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_works_cited_page_basic_format.html
