I need a literature review chapter for my dissertation that covers all aspects of the following project: The context: Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust have a large scheme called Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership (https://www.wildsheffield.com/discover/your-community/sheffield-lakeland-landscape-partnership/). As part of this, they have committed to deliver a range of land management interventions with the aim of ‘slowing the flow’ of water across the landscape and hence contributing to Natural Flood Management (NFM). NFM is a big topic in UK environment practice right now, with potential links into the new government agricultural funding policy ‘Environmental Land Management Scheme’ (ELMS). It is seen as an important way of making river catchments more resilient to climate change, reducing risks and costs of flooding downstream, as well as having lots of rewilding/nature co-benefits. There is lots of information at https://www.gov.uk/flood-and-coastal-erosion-risk-management-research-reports/working-with-natural-processes-to-reduce-flood-risk, this is based on a big Environment Agency project which completed in 2017. The big science question (and really an elephant in the room) is that it is really hard to make definite connections between relatively small interventions on a few fields or a single farm, and real changes in streamflow (and hence flood risk) further downstream. A lot of investment and interest tends to go on the basis of ‘we know it should work, and look at all the other benefits…’ For the purpose of this project, I will conducting 2 type of analysis. a – correlation analysis between catchment water level vs rainfall data over a 6 months period b – Mixed between Ancova to show the difference between before and after intervention. My hypothesis for the dissertation are: a – It is possible to prove, using stats (correlation model), that the catchment water level increases with increase of rainfall. (even when this is not clearly visible in real life as the catchment is so small) b – post intervention, it is possible to see a \’difference\’ in increase of catchment water level with rainfall using stats (mixed between ancova). I\’d need a literature review to back up my work and show there is a gap for my research. This should include/touch the following points: – natural flood management practices (and benefits compared to standard practices) – flooding in the UK (risks and threats) – big flood management practices (not natural) with relation to environmental impact / impact on populations – use of statistical analysis in this context (where the outcome is so small and we turn to stats to show if this is working)
