Purposes:
 To obtain practical experience in carrying out field research in identifying different land use, building types and architectural styles;
 To be able to record the field research accurately and neatly on a base map; and,
 To observe, analyze and describe, in report form, land use patterns and their potential relationships based on field observations.
Task:  Each student will observe, and record land uses for several blocks of a neighbourhood in the City of Hamilton or agreed upon neighbourhood in your community. The instructor will assign each student a portion of a neighbourhood to study for the students that are from the Hamilton and surrounding area.
Presentation Map:  Each student is required to accurately and neatly record the data they have compiled on a map which is to be submitted with a report.  The map must include the following:
o Title and border
o north arrow; and,
o legend
 The land use colour coding must be consistent with the colour coding provided the instructor.
Report:  Each student is required to prepare and submit a report describing the land uses
and pattern of use they observed within their study area. The reports shall be type written using Word or other word processing software and include the following:
 Title page indicating who prepared the report (student number and name), date and subject of the report;
y of the report must contain:
 Introduction describing the purpose of the report  General descriiption of the study area (i.e. location, intersecting roads etc.).  An explanation of how the field study was undertaken including day and time;
 A detailed descriiption of the land uses, and land use patterns observed within the study area
 Any specific neighbourhood characteristics or attributes:
Architectural styles, well-maintained property; tree lined streets; sidewalks etc.).  A discussion of the possible reason for the land use pattern observed within the study area (i.e. why do you think the neighbourhood looks the way it does today?);
 A descriiption of how the study area relates to the rest of the neighbourhood as whole (i.e. is the land use pattern/built form similar or different to the adjacent neighbourhood).
 A discussion of any potential land use conflicts observed and potential solutions to resolve the same (i.e. noisy factory adjacent residential).
