CONTENT: WHERE DO WE FIND ART: THE GALLERY & MUSEUM
Where Do We Find Art: The Gallery, you will be introduced to an influential American Street Artist, Shepard Fairey (50). Fairey is known for his wheat-paste murals and iconic posters depicting political figures and concerns, offering Fairey more of a street-art activist title. He is well-known for his portrait of President Barack Obama, which is included in the Hope poster. As well as, WWF Wrestler, Andre The Giant, when Fairey created an image of the Giant, entitled Andre the Giant Has a Posse. Because of the success of Fairey\’s artwork, he formed a tagline called OBEY®.
To begin this assignment, view a video of Faireyâs first major show in a gallery, Shepard Fairey (Links to an external site.) (5:05) which was filmed at the beginning of Faireyâs career. Art or Not, is also a theme we will be discussing throughout the course, is it art or is it not? Fairey is often referred to as an âoutsider artist,â which we will discuss in a module towards the end of the course. If you do not know the term âoutsider artistâ please feel free to look it up so that you are mindful of this art term in the future. The video also shows the trajectory of Faireyâs artwork over time, and all the people interviewed in the video discuss his direction in art from their own unique point of view. In addition, the discussion includes how and when Fairey was recognized and when he was able to commodify his art.
Please take notes while watching the video and once you have completed the video, then you should answer each question below fully and explain in detail each response in a minimum of 150 words. Please make sure to incorporate terminology discussed throughout the video and do not skip any of the questions. Enjoy your time reflecting on the video as this is your first part of the orientation assignment.
For the second portion of the assignment, enjoy taking a virtual tour to complete the assignment (click on The Palmer Art Museum Link below and search current virtual exhibitions, they change frequently) of our very own Penn State Art Museum on main campus, The Palmer Museum of Art, a different place where you can find art than that discussed with Shepard Faireyâs art. Learning from observation will be crucial, and also incorporating art terminology in your writing is a skill of art criticism, which is a significant component of this course. We want you to be able to discuss art by using art terminology as an art curator would. You will create a discussion of a minimum of 250 words analyzing the artwork from the outside and the inside of the art piece. Please follow the directions in the resource links portion below.
The combined assignment below is a 400-word minimum, please read each guided prompt.
