Discussion on Theory on Planned Behaviour Introduction
– Developed by Ajzen and Fishbeing (1980), the theory of reasoned action (TRA) is different than social judgment theory, cognitive dissonance theory, or self-perception theory: TRA focuses on altering behavior and not just attitudes. It is also called Theory of Planned Behavior.
– An underlying assumption is that human follow a fairly consistent and reasoned approach in their behavior.
– Much behavior is under volitional control: an individual has control over the behavior. – Theory of reasoned action is a map of how people make rational choices about what behaviors to engage in.
– TRA advances that intention is the best predictor of behavior. So, if we are about to do something, we must first have the intention to do it. But if a behavior is not under volition, intention will not be a good predictor of behavior.
Example: Mikhail intends to marry Natasha, but he does not have complete control over marrying her. Natasha must say yes to his proposal; Mikhailâs behavioral intention may not be a good predictor of his behavior; Natasha may say ânoâ.
