Confucianism is an old system of thought. Over two-thousand years old in fact! Given its
age—and given its original home in the Ancient Chinese world—someone might well think
that Confucianism is not relevant to contemporary Western life. Your job in this paper is to (a)
pick an element of Confucianism and explain it and then (b) argue that it is still relevant to
contemporary Western life.
For (a), you should state and explain the element of Confucianism that you will argue is still
relevant to contemporary Western life. An “an “Excellent” paper will include textual
reference(s) in this section as well as provide an example to make the aspect of Confucianism
you’re discussing as clear as possible
For (b), you should provide a clear reason why this aspect of Confucian is relevant to
contemporary Western life. An “Excellent” paper will also provide a reason why someone
*might think* that this element of Confucianism isn’t still relevant to contemporary Western
life and then say what’s wrong with that reason. Note that this reason should be specific to
the particular element of Confucianism that you’re discussing. For example, don’t provide
“Confucianism is old” as your reason for why someone might think that this part of
Confucianism isn’t still relevant. After all, that reason applies to every other element of
Confucianism!
(a) will correspond the Explanation part of the rubric; (b) will correspond to the Argument
section.
Include a thesis statement near the start of your paper in which you preview and
summarize what you will say in both sections of the paper. You’re free to use several
sentences for your thesis. Your paper should be explicit and clear throughout. The reader
shouldn’t have to guess at what you mean or fill in any blanks. Also make sure you’re going
into sufficient detail. A great way to increase the clarity of your paper is to use examples.
As far as organization, your paper will naturally fall into two parts: the first part should
explain the element of Confucianism you’ll be discussing; the second part should argue that
this element of Confucianism is relevant to contemporary Western life.
As far as length and formatting, your paper should be 3 pages double spaced. It can be
longer if there’s a good reason for it to be. Though I don’t recommend that you use them,
any and all outside sources must be clearly cited.
