In this assignment I am asking you to write on several key terms. They are basic to your understanding of the main concepts in each chapter. These appear in bold type (the definition is in a the text as well as in the glossary at the end of the book, and they are mostly listed at the end of each chapter. Review all of them, but for this assignment I will only select a few of them for you to write a more in depth analysis. I may also give you a different term or concept that I discuss in the lectures, but are not in the book. For this chapter the concepts I want you to write on are: From Chapters 1-4. 1.Cultural imperialism and cultural extinction 2. Migration 3.Colonialism and neocolonialism 4. Climate and climate regions In your elaboration of this broad concept of climate types, choose one climate type as your example (A-E or H) You should understand all four of them and how they are different, but the specific climate you chose has specific parameters and representative biota.(For example) are there any particular threats occurring in this climate type that need mentioning? Why not include a picture? As before You will use the following \”Dr. Watson\’s Famous REAL WORLD Analysis Structure\” : Tweek it to fit. Each section of the analysis requires at least two to three sentences, but not more than a long paragraph per item. You can always include a graphic and a reference. 1. Definition: What is it? (or also if it applies; Where is it? What is going on?, or How does this work?) 2. Why is this important? 3. Elaboration: Lets hear more on this…. details, controversies?, examples, case studies, expert opinions?, related items, statistics?, references etc. (Choose to focus on a couple of these.) 4. Context: How does this apply, to you or someone else personally, or in the global, national, regional, community, or local geographical contexts? HERE is an EXAMPLE OF WHAT A FULLY DEVELOPED SET OF KEY TERMS COULD LOOK LIKE. AS MY EMPHASIS ON GRAPHICS AND CREATIVITY CAN EASILY BE APPLIED HERE, YOU CAN UPLOAD A RELEVANT AND REFERENCED PHOTO, GRAPHIC, GRAPH, OR WEBSITE TO ADD TO THE ANALYSIS AND THAT WOULD BE EXCELLENT. ( and soon this will be be required.) EXAMPLE FROM A PAST STUDENT: Culture: Learned and shared behavior by a group of people that gives them a distinct \”way of life.\” Culture is made up of both material (technology, tools, etc.) and abstract (speech, religion, values, etc.) components. Culture is important in that it shows the history and environment of any given place. Culture has several levels in any given society and can be thought of as the totality of a humans expression. It ranges from our Spiritual expression (religion) to our society, and economy, and the institutions we create, to such intangible items as how we dream and do art. . Part of any region\’s culture is food. Indian cuisine is filled with spices and herbs, which have been used throughout India for countless centuries. Vietnamese food uses a lot of vegetables, providing insight into the land and plants that grow well there. I have always enjoyed trying food from new regions because there is so much history and evolution in each traditional dish. Understanding other cultures is also important for travel. Knowing the mores and folkways of a culture will allow you to present yourself and communicate in a respectful manner. Unfortunately, culture often brings with it a narrow minded and even violent dedication to specific values, political, and religious beliefs. This is actually ethnocentrism. This has had a role in every major war and many smaller scale tragedies. I wonder if peace would be easily achieved if culture was merely appreciated instead of adopted as part of one\’s self. If you feel that your culture is literally part of you, as most do, then fighting or killing to defend or spread the righteousness or even to defend the most frivolous details of your culture becomes far too easy. (The student added in some rerences to cultural clashes and adaptation of innovations were also here.) He uploaded a graphic too… This is an interesting graphic on emerging Asian/Pacific fusion foods in Honolulu. This is Okinawan Taco Rice.
(choose to focus on a couple of these.)
