For this essay, your central idea and thesis should follow one of the patterns in the samples. Include the central idea and thesis in your introduction and underline both or designate each one.To designate, name the (CENTRAL IDEA) and (THESIS) in this way.

The thesis should include at least two elements or devices you will focus on in the essay to prove your central idea. Elements or devices: tone diction, personification, metaphors, symbols, similes, repetition, alliteration, irony, assonance, rhyme, rhythm. etc. See literary terms for complete list.

Be sure to include your central idea, on the three methods of experiencing, interpreting and evaluating the poem or song in the topic sentences in the body of your essay and in their development.All three do not have to appear in each topic sentence or paragraph.
Each paragraph should have its own topic sentence that combines the central idea and one reason or topic stated in your thesis in some way. See links to samples below. Make the first or second sentence of each body paragraph your topic sentence and underline it. Each topic sentence should be one sentence long.
Include at least 5 short quotes from your song and poem. Or you may references line numbers from the poem or song. Do not use a quote in the essay\’s introduction or in topic sentences.
Give your essay a title that reflects the central idea in some way.

What the poem or song lyrics are about. What the attitude (tone) of the poet is toward the subject. The elements/devices within the poem and how they are used.
Brainstorm on your experience of the poem(s) or song(s). Explore the feelings, memories or ideas that an image, word or phrase stirs up in you. List them. Brainstorm on your interpretation of the poem(s)/song(s)
Draw a conclusion about the MEANING of the poem(s) or song(s) so you can include your interpretation. This meaning should go beyond what the poem is about. Brainstorm on your evaluation of the work(s).
Number the lines of the poem so you can reference or quote from them.
