Article 1
The question I would personally want Psychology to pursue in the future is how to address mental health stigma and improve access to treatment. This was suggested by Erlanger A. Turner.
I think mental health stigma is a really big issue, especially in today’s society, and it’s a very important thing to pursue and try to make better. Mental health issues and disorders have been growing in recent years so this issue is becoming even more urgent. The stigma around mental health has impacted many people in asking for help and getting treatment. Too many people with mental health issues or disorders don’t try to get treatment because they fear what people will think of them since there’s such a prevalent stigma around having a mental health issue. We need to try to solve this problem as soon as we can so people with mental health issues will feel comfortable getting the help they need. This question was sort of covered in this course. In the “Confessions of a Depressed Comic” TED talk, Kevin Breel mentioned that the best way to overcome the stigma around mental health is to just talk about it more. By talking about mental health more frequently, we can learn more about it that we didn’t already know, which can help change some peoples assumptions about it. This will also help people realize that many more people have mental health issues than they thought, and they won’t feel as alone if they are dealing with one themselves, so trying to get treatment won’t feel as scary or intimidating. Improving access to treatment for mental health issues is also very important because some people might not be able to get treatment even if they want to or are willing to, if they don’t live close to a treatment center. When access to treatment is improved, even more people will be able to get the help they need.

\”Including every group\” by Lillian Comas-Diaz states that a question that must be pursued in the future is how to integrate diversity into psychology research and including the diversified cultures.

I believe that this is a question that must be actively and immediately pursued in the science of psychology. The majority of psychology has been studied by only a mere fraction of the worlds cultures and ethnics groups. Psychologist predominantly studied educated citizens in Western countries, excluding people of lower incomes, and 85% of the worlds ethnic, and cultural groups. Those that study psychology, tend to be Western white men. I believe that it is important to integrate more diversity in psychology because societies are shaped by their cultures and there are so many different cultures left out. This is a loss of perspective and forms of understanding. This topic has been discussed earlier in this course which shows that the filed of psychology acknowledges this issue and is creating steps to resolve.
