I really appreciated Izabelly and Katelyn’s resources and presentation. The idea of colonialism is very real and important but not acknowledged enough. During their presentation, I thought about how disability is often colonized. Mainstream society often views disabled individuals as different or not as important as nondisabled individuals and works to control them. They are regarded as lesser and not valuable to the community because they do not produce the same amount of work to create profit. I specifically thought of ableism, or the favor of nondisabled individuals, and how that needs to be decolonized. Decolonizing ableism will create room for people with disabilities. It will focus on uplifting differences that we all have instead of trying to homogenize everyone into the same groups. A possible strategy for decolonizing sports is to tackle societal structures that thrive on inequity. An idea that comes to mind is the lack of representation in media of all body types. Fitness brands have begun showcasing more inclusive body types, but more is needed. Many individuals strive to achieve bodies they may not be genetically built for, but those bodies they see in ads, magazines, and websites are also photoshopped or edited. I would love to see more natural and authentic bodies representing sport and fitness. Decolonizing sports by creating more inclusive and genuine content will create opportunities and space for all individuals, allowing more individuals to feel comfortable being active and exercising in larger social groups without the fear of judgment. Working towards inclusion and celebration of differences in sports is essential. Comparison often steals joy, and it creates self-esteem issues. A sports community built on transparency and celebrating all people who enjoy sports and only not idolizing influencers or athletes who are physically fit is essential. I want all people to feel comfortable in workout clothes, and I want all people to feel accepted in trying new activities. Safe spaces are an essential step in decolonizing sport and kinesiology. I will continue to be open-minded and work towards creating this community through more diverse research and creating programs that directly address their needs.
