IMPORTANT: Remember that you are required to post TWO messages per unit. Posting only one message during a unit can only get you a score of 50 out of 100 points at the most. 50/100 is an \”F\”. The first message should be posted during the first half of the week (Tuesday-Thursday). If you do not post your first message by Thursday at 11:59 PM during the week, points will be subtracted from your grade. Numbered discussion questions will be posted for each unit on the page titled \”Discussion Questions\” in the module. Do NOT answer more than one of the numbered questions. Answer only ONE. For the first message of the week students must respond to ONE of these questions. The second message must be a response to one of the posts by the other students so it will normally be posted during the second half of the week (Friday-Monday). The second message should analyze a student\’s post and make insightful comments that take the discussion further. For more information see the document, \”Grading Criteria for the Discussion Forums\” on the home/opening page.
Answer:
4) As Tabor says, we have no way of knowing, but if Mary was raped or, in a different scenario, she fell in love with a young man other than Joseph before her engagement: What restrictions and pressures would her parents and society have placed upon her?
Respond to classmate: Hannah
When discussing the birth of Jesus, and trying to explain how Mary became pregnant with Jesus after having been \”still a virgin\”, it is difficult to recognize what really happened. The Bible says God put Jesus into the womb of Mary without her ever having lost her virginity, but logically and scientifically that would not be able to happen. Although we will never know if she was raped and never spoke up or if she had fallen in love with someone before Joseph, we can infer that one of those scenarios must be true. The truth of what actually happened to Mary would have been kept secret due to the harsh judgment that society would have had on her for what happened to her. She would have been shunned for having premarital sex, regardless if she chose it or not, unfortunately. Society frowned upon sex before marriage immensely in their time and it could have even gone as far as her family disowning her and the entire town shunning her. Along with that, if Joseph were to be with her after she had slept with another man before marriage, he would also be deemed unclean and unholy and there is a possibility he would be shunned and disowned if he chose to continue to associate with her. Had everyone found out about her relations with another man, she would have been deemed unholy and would never be able to marry again or birth any other children, and would most likely spend the rest of her days alone and repenting, even if it was not a situation she chose herself. Society was very harsh in that day and age and she would have been an outcast for either being raped or a decision she made by taking a risk.
