Course Objective: demonstrate an understanding of terms, concepts, and the major theories (structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism) essential to understanding the field of sociology, and be able to apply these fundamentals to their own lives and the larger society ASSIGNMENT: You are to write an essay demonstrating your understanding of the 3 major sociological perspectives: functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. The paper requires you to apply each of the perspectives to a job you have had or currently have or another topic that must be approved by the professor. Analyze the job thoroughly, applying first one perspective, then a second, and then the third. Use appropriate terminology such as “manifest and latent function” “social construction,” and “competition between groups” as you apply the perspectives to the job you are analyzing. Do not mix the perspectives, but apply them separately. Be clear about which perspective you are using, and when you are changing to another perspective. Use complete sentences and proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Do not copy and paste definitions from anywhere!! All definitions must be in your own words to show an understanding of them. If you have never had paid employment, analyze an organization of which you are a member or for which you volunteer. You may also use informal employment such as babysitting, mowing lawns, etc. Your paper should be 1000-1500 words (about 2 ½ to 3 pages typed), double spaced, with a 1” margin all around. There should be no “I, we, you, us, they\” in this paper. This is not a reflection or personal connection paper. The purpose of the paper is to argue how the job fits.
