As outlined in the lectures, C. Wright Mills employs the idea of \’the sociological imagination\’ to argue that the discipline of sociology enables us to understand the relationship between personal experience and broader socially accepted norms. Select one of the questions from the essay question list. In your essay, make sure you reference the different types of sociological research that have been undertaken on the topic, noting both established studies in the area as well as recent work (published in the last 5 years). Also, take note of how relevant structural forces influence the social lives of individuals in ways that are beyond their direct control – and perhaps about which they are not significantly aware. Support your answer by making links between the existing sociological research you identify and the question you select. In approximately 1500 words, respond to your chosen question. When discussing your topic, you are advised to focus on an area of study or a sociological case rather than provide a broad or generic description. In your arguments, you need to address the significance of the topic that you have chosen, key concepts related to the topic and cite relevant literature. You will need to include at least 8 peer reviewed sources of two different types, but they may be the same or different ones than you had in your essay plan. The Course Textbook is NOT to be included as part of your literature review and references. Essay Questions – Choose ONE 1.
