It is the place where you record your observations, preliminary theories, and early ideas about data collection and analysis. It is also the place where you keep a record of the research decisions you make (. How did you select your sample? Who agreed to an interview? Who refused? Why did you observe in the place you selected?) Fieldnotes are essential to both data analysis and writing. Purpose: 1. Gain experience making detailed visual observations 2. Practice making jottings of observations 3. Translate jottings into coherent prose General instructions about making field observations and creating fieldnotes are located Tasks: Select a public place that you can easily access and observe unobtrusively and without violating anyone\’s privacy. Do NOT choose a site located on any SFU campus. While public spaces are places of social life, they can also be sites of political contest. Their physical forms often shape people’s perspectives and identities in very subtle ways. Visit your chosen site for a minimum of 30 minutes. For this first set of fieldnotes, concentrate on visually observing the physical setting. It is not possible to fully capture the entire scene, so you will have to make choices about what you are seeing and recording. Be sure to describe the place and the human activities, but you will also need to take note of the larger environment. Some things you might observe: What is the place like physically? Are there people there? How many? What can you observe about the people? What are they doing? How are they interacting with each other? With the physical features of the site? What is the weather? Does it seem to be affecting how people act? While you are observing make jottings (as described by Emerson, Fretz & Shaw Download Emerson, Fretz & Shaw ) Take a photograph* or make a sketch of the site. You will include this in the fieldnotes you submit. Translate your jottings into complete sentences and paragraphs, using different fonts or colours to distinguish your observations from your interpretations. At the top of the page, record the date, place, and time of your observations. Submit your jottings, completed fieldnotes and the photograph* or sketch of the scene as a single document
