Choose a research topic of interest that relates to your program of study (Mines is information security). You may consider one of the following lists of research areas or your own research topic relating to Information Studies
These examples are for students to begin generating ideas about potential topics of interest:
Cyber-security:
What are the \”cyber-security\” concerns or problems trending in the last five years, what types of concerns or problems should businesses, and organizations be aware of? Do all businesses and organizations collecting data (personal, business, etc.) have a responsibility to protect that data at a specific level or is it dependent on the type of organization? What \”solutions\” to cyber-security concerns or problems have been or are being proposed?
Social Media:
Are there influences and impacts of social media in society, the public, in general or on specific age groups? If there are influences and impacts, define them and who and/or what has been affected. What is the future of social media?
Wearable Technology and Healthcare:
What is \”wearable technology\”? What are the influences, impacts, potential and challenges of this technology in general and in the healthcare, field as shown in the research for the last five years? Discuss potential ethical implications and the probable future of this technology.
Digital Currency:
What is digital currency such as bitcoin? What are the influences, impacts, potential and challenges of this technology in general as shown in the research for the last five years? Discuss potential ethical implications and the potential future of this technology.
The purpose of this assignment is to help begin determining the project topic and the process of completing the project.
For this assignment discuss the following for the preliminary proposal…
Introduction
Describe the topic you have selected and the main focus of the project;
Describe the importance of the work to the field of information studies;
Provide a thesis statement or question that will provide the focus of the project.
Resource Review
Describe research that may be pertinent to your project topic and list any journal articles you have reviewed;
Describe how the related research you have selected will inform your project.
III. Project Plan
What is your plan to complete the project?
Write the Preliminary Proposal:
Suggested length: 2-4 pages plus reference page if applicable.
Use a format with a distinct introductory paragraph –to define what you are writing about and establish the context of the writing, in this case the policy; body paragraphs – will contain the main topic content; and conclusion – to summarize what you have written.
The assignment MUST include the following:
Correct APA Format for in-text citations (when used)
Introductory paragraph,
Text body paragraphs,
Concluding paragraph,
List of references (labeled References) on a separate page (when used),
Use MS WORD as a “.doc” or “.docx” document only!
Check spelling and grammar,
Formatting for the text pages should be as follows: 1-inch margins, 12-point font, double spaced, page numbers, and last name in the header.

Check the syllabus for information about acceptable websites for the assignment resources. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable website! Many .com and some .org sites will not be acceptable and should be verified before use..
For written projects when journal articles or other outside sources are used the student MUST follow the American Psychological Association (APA) citation and reference style, which must be correct in all aspects.
Be sure to PROPERLY cite any direct quotes or other resources appropriately usiluvng APA citation style formatting!
