You will write a 5 paragraph, 750 word (minimum) research paper. In this paper you will perform a STYLISTIC ANALYSIS of 3 (three) works of art from the same culture and time period, and discuss how they exemplify that ONE specific culture. You will use research and analysis to demonstrate your understanding of the distinctive characteristics of the selected culture.

3. Research both the history of the time period/culture, and the 3 artworks so that you will fully understand the artworks and cultural and historical context. The bulk of your research should involve the use of books and journal articles as sources. Through the JSCC Library you have free access to thousands of electronic books and journal articles. Simply enter your JSCC user name and password to login. Make sure web sources are academically sound and scholarly such as museum or college websites. Do not use Wikipedia; it is unreliable.
Organization/Content Requirements: The paper should adhere to the following organization and content outline. It should consist of 5 paragraphs: an introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.
⢠Introduction: The introductory paragraph should clearly and concisely introduce the topic. It must include a thesis.
o You should state the ONE topic will you be discussing. Provide background or contextual information regarding the topic (when, where, why?). Clearly outline the defining characteristic that contribute to the style including formal elements, design principles, themes, and the level of abstraction or representation.
⢠Paragraphs 2 – 4: In these paragraphs you will analyze each artwork separately (1 artwork per paragraph). Consider the following questions and include the required information within the body of the paragraph.
o Introduce the work of art with the information that you know about it. Include title, artist (if known), and date.
o Describe the work and the medium used. Is the work of art a sculpture, painting, photograph, etc.? Be specific and work this information into the paper.
o What is the subject matter of the artwork?
o Analyze the artwork and how it reflects the specific culture or artistic movement in terms of visual elements, principles of design, and theme. Emphasize the shared characteristics outlined in the introduction and thesis that define the culture.
o Make sure your analysis supports and relates back to the thesis statement.
⢠Concluding Paragraph: Summarize the main points of the paper and reiterate the thesis statement.
Formatting Requirements:
⢠Paper should be a minimum of 750 words.
⢠Paragraphs should follow basic academic standards: double-spaced, 11 or 12-point font, a basic font such as Arial or Calibri, about 1-inch margins.
⢠Include images of the artworks discussed. Label them with all known information: title, date, artist, culture etc. Use the labels in your textbook as an example for what information is appropriate to include.
Grammar and Spelling Requirements:
⢠The paper should be free from major errors in spelling and grammar. Be sure to proofread for correct spelling and grammar usage.
⢠Maintain a formal tone and avoid using slang or conversational jargon.
