THE WATER CYCLE
Objective: By the end of the class, students will be able to list and explain the four steps of the water cycle with 75% accuracy. 
Assessment: The teacher will intentionally observe students during class as they work in groups to draw a diagram of the water cycle and label it.

This assessment is not well-aligned with the daily objective for the following reasons: a) Since the students are working in groups, it will be difficult to assess individual student mastery. b) Drawing and labeling a diagram does not require students to explain each step of the water cycle. An open-ended response would be a more appropriate assessment for this objective, because it allows students to independently demonstrate their knowledge of this concept. You will know whether the student is able to apply this skill independently if they are able to list and explain the four steps of the water cycle in other contexts (such as a verbal response) and in other settings (such as a different classroom).
FRACTIONS
Objective: By the end of class, students will be able to identify 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, and 1/6 of a circle with 80% accuracy.
Assessment: The teacher will hold a basket of circles divided into the fraction parts listed in the objective. Before exiting the classroom, students will draw a circle at random from the basket and tell the teacher which fraction they chose.

This assessment is not well-aligned with the daily objective for the following reasons: a) The assessment doesn\’t measure whether each student can identify each of the fractions listed in the objective. Since each student only draws one circle, the assessment only measures whether the student can identify the fraction that he drew, and not the other fractions. b) There is no way to score an 80% on this assessment, since the student only has one opportunity to demonstrate knowledge. A quiz would be a more appropriate assessment for this objective. The quiz would need to include all five fractions listed in the objective in order to appropriately assess mastery. You will know whether the student is able to apply this skill independently if they are able to identify these fractions in other contexts (such as a cooking or science lesson) and in other settings (in other classrooms or at home).
RHYMING
Objective: By the end of class, students will be able to match pictures of objects represented by rhyming words with 80% accuracy. 
Assessment: Students will complete a quiz that requires them to draw a line connecting five rhyming pairs of words.

This assessment is well-aligned with the daily objective for the following reasons: a) The assessment measures the skill described in the objective: students are matching pictures of rhyming words. b) It is possible to score an 80% on this assessment, since there are five rhyming pairs of words. You will know whether the student is able to apply this skill independently if they are able to match pictures of rhyming words in other contexts (different words, different lesson) and other settings (another classroom, different teacher).
