Prompt: Please create a creative piece inspired by the play attached below . The creative piece can be anything from a piece of visual art, craft, prose, poetry, music, multi-media, video, or anything in between. You will accompany the creative piece with an analytical/critical discussion of why you chose to represent the text you did, in the way that you did and how it connects to our course theme(s) and key concept(s). Please submit both the project and the response on Blackboard; you will need to figure out a way to submit something I can see and mark (files, pictures, videos, audio, etc.), even if your piece transcends the two dimensional!
The Project: Keep in mind that this final assignment should reflect what you’ve learned about plays and playwrighting in this course. This project is meant to help you connect your own creativity to the course’s ideas and text(s). The possibilities are endless, and your creative piece can be anything inspired by any of the plays studied this term. That could mean:re-writing part of a scene from another narrative perspective
an expansion of one of our author’s scenes or ideas
your own short story or poem inspired by one of our texts
creating a painting, a song, or a short film inspired by our texts
creating a collage of events or images (visual, musical, or digital), that relates to our texts or our course concerns
acting out a part of a scene
cooking a mealYour piece may be prose, poetry, drama, visual, musical, dance, culinary, sculpture, photograph. I am very open to the creative possibilities and to the inspiration that might find you. The point of this assignment is to get us all engaged in our own creative processes, and to allow the texts we have read this term to ignite our own imaginations, inspirations, and skills. If you are unsure if your idea is appropriate, feel free to talk with me and I would be happy to brainstorm with you.
The Response: Your creative piece should be accompanied by an analytical or critical discussion of why you chose to make the piece that you did in the manner that you did. You could address any combination of the following questions: why this play, episode, or scene? Why this medium? How does it relate to, support, or push back against the issues we’ve discussed this term? Think about voice, tone, and mood. Think about historical contexts, representational strategies, and any relevant social, political, aesthetic, and/or philosophical ideas. This section of the project should be a 300-500 word reflection on what you have done and why, and how you see your creative piece relating to our course and its concerns.
