Complete the METHODS, RESULTS, and DISCUSSIONS AND CONCLUSIONS sections
of the research project.
Part I: METHODS (30pts)
The methods section is broken into six subsections.
The Current Study (5pts)
• Restate the purpose of the study;
• State whether the current study is inductive or deductive (define the approach; explain
why this approach is taken);
• Provide the four hypotheses being tested (each hypothesis examines whether a social
learning theory factor explains adolescent drug use). Use bullet points to list the four
hypotheses.
Sampling Method (5pts)
• Explain why it is necessary to sample;
• Identify and define the sampling method used in this study. Explain your answer (Why
the sample is selected using X sampling);
• Assess one strength of the sampling method used in the current research; be sure this is
specific to the Sampling Method and not the Method of Data Collection;
• Assess one weaknesses of the sampling method used in the current research; be sure this
is specific to the Sampling Method and not the Method of Data Collection.
Sample (5pts)
• State the demographic information of the sample;
• Assess the quality of the sample
o Discuss whether the sample has generalizability; define the term (generalizability)
and explain your answer;
o Discuss whether the sample has cross population generalizability; define the term
(cross population generalizability) and explain your answer;
Method of Data Collection (5pts)
• Identify and define the type of survey used to collect the data;
• Assess two strengths and two weaknesses of collecting data through surveys.
Measures (5pts)
• Discuss how variables are measured in the current study (one variable per paragraph). In
each paragraph, describe:
o Variable name
o Whether it is an independent or dependent variable;
o Conceptualize the variable;
o Operationalize the variable (by providing how the variable is measured in the
survey and how it is coded with numbers). This is the only area where quotes
are permitted.
Validity (5pts)
• External Validity: Conclude whether or not the study has external validity; define the
term (external validity) and explain your answer;
• Internal Validity: Conclude whether or not the study has internal validity; define the
term (internal validity) and explain your answer;
• Measurement Validity: Assess measurement validity for the variables:
o Define face validity. Choose a variable, determine if it has face validity, and
explain your answer;
o Define content validity. Choose a variable, determine if it has content validity,
and explain your answer.
Part II: RESULTS (10pts)
Start a new section named Results. See documents named Results and Results Template
(available on Blackboard) for more information.
Under the Descriiptive Statistics subsection, create a table that displays the mean or frequency
distribution of all the variables. Then write a paragraph that interprets the table. (5pts)
Under the Hypothesis Testing subsection, describe the study results. (5pts)
• If a statistically significant relationship exists between each social learning theory
variable and the dependent variable;
• If the four hypotheses are supported (restate the hypotheses, report the p values of each
test, and explain why each hypothesis is supported/not supported).
Part III: Discussions and Conclusions (20pts)
Start a new section named Discussions and Conclusions
• Restate the purpose of the study and why the study is important. In the same paragraph,
summarize the results of the hypothesis tests in a general manner. In other words, discuss
overall conclusions about the relationship between social learning theory and adolescent
substance use and general patterns seen in the hypothesis testing. (5pts)
• Under the Implications for Theory and Literature subsection, discuss what this study
suggests about the theory (i.e. Does the results support social learning theory? What
conclusions can we draw about adolescent drug usage?). Next, discuss whether the
findings of this study are consistent with past research from the literature review (the four
articles you reviewed under the literature review section) and explain your answers. Note
each study from the LITERATURE REVIEW should be discussed. (5pts)
• Under the Implications for Policy subsection, discuss four unique policy implications.
Each policy implication should address what we learned from the results of one of the
hypothesis tests. (5pts)
• Under the Limitations and Future Research subsection, discuss at least one limitation of
the study design. Also discuss how future research can address this limitation. (5pts)
