Answer the questions in a paragraph at most or a few sentences if that is all that is needed to answer the question.
Answer all parts of questions, every sub-question, but do not write essays please, try to answer as simply as possible.
1)Chapter three of the book, “The Elementary Christian Metaphysics,” is entitled “The Apprehension of Being.” In the first five pages of that chapter, Father Owens discusses the knowledge of the being of things as involving two operations of the intellect acting in unity. Those operations are called conceptualization (simple apprehension) and judgment (judgment being taken in what he calls a technical sense of the term). What can you tell me about the meaning of these two operations of the intellect as talked about on those pages?
2)In chapter three, Fr. Owens talks about the being of sensible things as spread out into past, present and future. In doing so he gives an example of the being of an individual person like yourself. What does he say there about this?
3)Also in chapter three he speaks about the knowledge of the existence (the being) of things as of two kinds: direct and indirect. The direct knowledge of the being of things is called judgment. The term judgment which he uses here is taken in the technical sense of the term which he defined in earlier in the chapter and which I mentioned above. But the knowledge of being can also be indirect. Another name for indirect knowledge is reasoning. What can you say about all this? And in this regard, what can you say about the example of a man whose view of a fire is blocked by a hill, but who can see smoke rising from the other side of the hill?
4.Chapter four of the book is entitled “The Conceptualization of Being.” a)How does the conceptualization of being differ from the judgment of being spoken of the chapter three?
b)Can you say anything about the meaning of the terms: act and perfection? c)On page 60 at the beginning of the second paragraph, Fr. Owens conceptualizes being as “the act of all acts and the perfection of all perfections.” What can you say about the meaning of this statement?
5)Does St. Thomas think that you could have a universe of essences of different kinds without existence? Can you say anything about this?
6)Chapter five is entitled “The Accidentality and the Priority of Being.”
b)What did it mean to say that existence (being) is accidental to what has it?
c)What did it mean to say that being is prior to what has it?
d)Why can a thing not give itself its own being?
e)Explain the meaning of efficient cause (page 73)?
f)Why must a finite existing thing (a creature) have its being from something else?
7)What if the something else from which a thing has its being also has accidental being?
8)Neither St. Thomas or Fr. Owens thinks it is possible to have an endless series of causes each of which has its being from something else. They argue that an infinite series of causes (also called caused causes or secondary causes) is not sufficient to account for the being of things, but that the only way all things that have caused being can exist is by tracing all of them back to what was called the First Cause or the Uncaused Cause or to what can be called Subsistent Being. What can you say about all of this?
7)In their metaphysics, St. Thomas and Fr. Owens argue that Subsistent Being (which can also be called the Nature of Being and can also be understood as being God) must be infinitely perfect and infinitely good and entirely free from any imperfection or any evil at all. Can you say anything about this?
