The writer is required to post a critical recap (at least 400 words of Chapter 3) and they must also respond to one other peer post comprehensively (at least 150-200 words). I attached a PDF version of the textbook for Chapter 3. PEER POST #1: This chapter begins by discussing how in the United States we claim that we are a âclasslessâ society and that all people are equal in the eyes of the law and economically, but after reading and analyzing the text in chapter 3, we know that is just untrue. There is a lack of conversation surrounding class, race, gender, and crime but in this specific chapter, you can see that those societal discussions about class/ economic privilege and crime within those topics are even more invisible than initially thought. From gated communities to the advantages within crime and law, economic privilege is very real and allows for inequality in all institutions. This chapter allows readers to understand these concepts while showing us facts and statistics, and how economics and class affects the justice system and all the ideologies within criminal justice. In regards to the tug and pull between criminal justice and economics and class, a good example the book present was how people of a certain class and economic status could almost âget away with murder.â The book says, âWhile evidence shows that criminal justice procedures are more even handed than in the past, it is also painfully obvious that the growing gap between rich and poor, and white and black, continues to make criminal justice a social battleground rather than a mechanism to increase social peaceâ(Conley 1994: 66). Another point this chapter made was that the justice system and law enforcement are also contributing to the continuous battle and social issue of race and class/ economic separation. Like said prior our society claims equality but this blatant separation aids in the continuation in poverty, high crime rates in certain communities, lack of opportunity, lack of services and programs, less education, and much more. Although in further chapters the book will delve deeper into these topics, there are connections between race, class, and economic privilege.
